Weeknight Meals

I struggle with what to feed my family for dinner during the week. Weeknight meals aren’t my topic of choice.

I don’t revel in trying to figure it out. If I’m being completely honest, I really don’t enjoy cooking whatever it is I’ve finally decided on making. At all.

It’s painful.

Yesterday, I was planning ahead, and asked my kids what they wanted to eat this week. If I’m going to take the time and energy to cook dinner, I would appreciate them actually eating it. I don’t think that’s asking too much. Do you?

They both named pesto and tacos.

“We had that last week,” I said.

“Yes, but it’s the only thing you make that we really like,” Avi said.

“Face it Mom, ” Zoe explained, “You’re good at a lot of things, but cooking just isn’t one of them. You must accept this.”

Ouch. That was harsh.

I try to make them nutritious food, but sometimes, I do tend to choose healthy meals over making food that might taste better. They should thank me for this. I was starting to feel unappreciated, especially since I’ve been attempting to step up the weeknight meals around here.

Making food for people who don’t eat isn’t my idea of fun.

I decided to prove them wrong. I wanted to make them something they would actually like, and it wouldn’t be pesto or tacos.

To the store I went, and I bought all the ingredients to make a quiche. It wasn’t as healthy as it could be, but it was healthy enough. They didn’t just like it, they loved it.

How’s that for proving them wrong? This Moms got skills. But guess what? Jon came home, took one look at it and said, “I hate spinach. If I had known you were going to make that, I would have picked up something on the way home from work.”

I can’t win.

Find meaning each day,

Dara

Maybe you could post your meals on Sunday each week so your husband and kids are forewarned?

That is a great idea, but sadly, would take more organization than I think I’ll ever have!

      The weekly challenge!

I feel your pain on this one, sadly. I used to love to cook. Now, not so much. Funny enough, the only meal everyone likes at my house is pesto. So at least you have one meal over on me. 2 picky kid eaters and a hubby that’s not much better ends up as 4 different meals most nights. Exactly what everyone says to never do! Can’t win. And…I would not trade this problem for anyone else’s any day of the week! So we’ll keep on trying, right?!

      Absolutely, we’ll keep on trying!
