The Dog Ate It

For the past week, every time I come home after being out of the house, our Golden Retriever is sitting in the den waiting for me. What’s different about this week, however, is that he’s sitting in the den destroying something he shouldn’t have in the first place. And by something, I mean sunglasses, the TV remote control, a piece of Avi’s Halloween costume, Zoe’s birthday cards, pens, pencils, shorts, and a tube of deodorant. It’s only been a week. Lately, when someone can’t find something, I have to say, “the dog ate it.”

And, in this instance, the dog really did eat whatever item we’re looking for.

What is going on with this dog?

It’s like someone flipped a switch, and now he’s destroying things, making himself bleed, and getting into items that can make him sick. After a few days of this, before I left the house, I quickly made sure nothing was in his reach. I closed all the bedroom doors, and made sure there weren’t any items he would want. But somehow, someway, he still managed to get to items I wouldn’t think he would even want. Apparently, I’m not good at reading the mind of a dog.

I hear myself saying, "The dog ate it," often.

I hear myself saying, “The dog ate it,” often.

Here’s what is especially confusing to me: I’m not leaving him for long periods of time, and our household hasn’t experienced any changes. So, why the sudden change in our furry friend?

I don’t know.

What I do know, is that we’ve spent a fortune on dog toys and bones, and need to replace a few expensive items. I actually had to call the vet to see if he needed medical treatment after eating the tube of deodorant.

If you have any thoughts, I’m happy to hear them. We can’t keep replacing things around our house, and I don’t know how much more blood I can scrub out of the carpet. Plus, the poor dog is going to cause his teeth to fall out. And then what?

The worst part of all of this: he ate the remote control to the TV that allows us to watch Netflix. We ordered a new one, but it’s been over a week, and we still can’t watch Netflix on that TV.

Can you even imagine our pain? If you have any thoughts, I beg you, please share them with me!

Find meaning each day,

Dara
