Changes

Changes. They’re an inevitable part of life that can cause all of us to feel anxious and unsettled. Especially if we weren’t expecting it.

That’s the thing about life, it never stays constant. It’s always changing.

Everyone deals with change in different ways. Some people love change, are extremely flexible and aren’t fazed by it. Other people can’t even stand the thought of any type of deviation from a set plan.

We’re all trying to do the best we can and adapt to whatever is going on in our lives.

I was having a conversation with a friend at a party, someone who recently retired, and she was telling me how her employment change is causing her to feel lost. “I don’t know what I’m doing,” she said, “I wake up in the morning and don’t have a place to go. I worked for over thirty years, now my kids are all grown and I don’t have anything to do.”

Change is just part of life.

Change is just part of life.

When she was raising her kids and working, she had a purpose. She knew what she was doing, where she was going and probably wished she had the time she now has. Now that she has complete freedom, it’s scary. She doesn’t know what to do with it. She feels disoriented. Lost. She wakes up in the morning and doesn’t know what her purpose is.

Yet.

She has to give herself time to figure it out.

“No one is expecting anything from me,” she said, “and it’s the strangest feeling. I could stay in bed all day and no one would care.” Staying in bed all day doesn’t sound horrible to me, but I understood what she was saying.

Anytime we have a change, it can bring about a feeling of uneasiness and anxiety. Change, even if we’re happy about it, can cause us to feel a little unsettled.

She’s happy about being retired, in theory, but now she just has to figure it out.

She has to find her purpose.

We all have to find our purpose.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you are in your life, we all want to feel needed. We want to feel good about the way we’re living our lives. We want to wake up and know what our purpose for the day is.

Remember, it takes time. This can feel frustrating if your someone who likes immediate gratification, but it takes time and patience to figure things out.

Of course, there are the changes we don’t want. The ones that come and aren’t welcomed. Those are especially challenging to adapt to, but we must. We have to allow ourselves time to get used to whatever comes our way and then move forward. We have to do the best we can with the hand we’ve been dealt.

Whatever you’re going through in your life and whatever changes you’re dealing with, I know it can be scary.

Especially if you’re dealing with an unplanned change.

Try to be flexible. Be patient. Be kind with yourself.

Allow yourself to feel scared and vulnerable and then push through the unknown.

It can be unsettling to wake up and not know what you’re going to do with your day. It can also be exciting. It’s all how you look at it. Like most things in life, attitude is everything. Sometimes the universe sends us change in the form of challenges. Believe in yourself and have faith that you’ll figure it out.

Be willing to push yourself, let yourself try new experiences and see where you end up. And don’t worry, if you make a mistake, you can always start over. That’s the great part about life, most things aren’t set in stone.

Find meaning each day,
