The Sugar Bowl

I walked into the kitchen and saw Avi, my thirteen year old daughter, eating sugar out of the sugar bowl. She was literally standing by the coffee maker, scooping sugar onto a spoon and pouring it into her mouth.

I don’t even want to think about how many scoops she’d had by the time I walked into the kitchen.

Lovely. Just what every Mom wants to see.

“What are you doing,” I said as the sugar was entering her mouth.

Who doesn't enjoy candy every now and then?

Who doesn’t enjoy candy every now and then?

She had guilt written all over her face.

“Busted,” she said, “I guess I was caught in the act.” Sugar went everywhere when she said this, because laughing was causing it to fall out of her mouth and onto the kitchen counter and floor.

“I guess you were,” I said, still confused as to why my child was eating sugar out of the bowl.

“So, what are you doing?” I asked, “Did you just decide to help yourself to a little sugar?”

“I was making coffee, and while the machine warmed up, I just thought I’d have a little appetizer,” Avi said still laughing. I’m sure she was extra happy from the sugar high she was in the process of giving herself.

Nice, right?

“I can’t believe you’re doing that,” I said in a completely disgusted voice, “If you want something sweet, have a cookie or a piece of candy, but don’t eat sugar.”

“Like you never did this,” she shot back quickly.

“No. I never ate sugar out of a sugar bowl.”

“Maybe not in this decade, but maybe a few decades ago you did,” she explained in her innocent voice.

Ouch, that hurt.

How did we get from me scolding Avi about what she was doing to discussing my age?

The sweetness of kids. I had to giggle because I really didn’t want to calculate how old I was “a few decades ago,” and it was funny. You have to laugh in these situations, and always remember your sense of humor when raising kids. You just never know what they’ll say or do, but that’s what keeps things fun. Most of the time.

If eating sugar out of the bowl is the worst thing she does, then I’m getting off pretty easily. But then again, she’s only thirteen.

Find meaning each day,

Dara
