I’ll Talk to Anyone, at Anytime
While riding in a cab on vacation recently, I started talking to the driver. He was a nice man, in his sixties, and was happy to chat.
I’ve already told you that I’ll talk to anyone, at anytime, and if there’s someone who is willing to listen to me, well, that’s even better. But it’s not required.
I could probably sit in a room alone, talk to myself, and have a great time.
But this sweet cab driver and I were having a lovely chat. We weren’t talking about anything special. The weather, the city we were in, and the like. I love meeting new people, especially when I travel. I learn a lot about myself from talking to others. It gives me a different perspective, and I enjoy hearing about their lives.
While we were talking, I asked him what he does for fun.
He paused for a moment, thought about it, and then said with a funny look on his face, “I don’t really do anything for fun.”
He looked sad.
I made the driver sad.
That was not my intention.
He continued, “I have a family, grown children, and I’m busy with them, and their children.”
“Of course you’re busy with them,” I said, trying to cheer him up, “How wonderful for you to have your family close by.”
“But I don’t really do anything for me,” he said, with that same funny look on his face.
That’s me, spreading my cheer, one innocent person at a time.
I let it go, because he looked pensive, and I wanted to reach the destination safely. My family was also in the cab with me, rolling their eyes, and giving me looks that screamed PLEASE BE QUIET.
Everyone, no matter their age or situation in life, deserves to do something they enjoy, for themselves, that brings them fun and excitement.
I fully understand being busy with family, responsibilities, and children, but we each need to find that special “something,” and it’s different for everyone.
What’s fun for one person might sound awful to another.
For me, I enjoy writing, practicing yoga, and exercising. These things are fun to me. Jon likes to cook, something that causes me much stress and anxiety. My daughter Zoe likes to play golf, take pictures, and stare at her phone for HOURS. Avi enjoys sewing, anything having to do with Art, and running. We’re each wired differently, and enjoy different hobbies.
We love being together, but we also enjoy our individual hobbies.
Whatever you find interesting, go for it. While I know spending time with your family is fun, you also need something that’s just for you. Something that brings a smile to your face, that you look forward to doing, and maybe, just maybe, makes you giggle like a child.
No one can tell you what it is, but you.
Find meaning each day,
I really haven’t taught myself to commit to that. ‘personal time’. But I do like making candles and sewing and other crafty things.
How wonderful to have hobbies you enjoy. That’s taking time for yourself, and I’m sure you feel relaxed and happy when you spend time doing the activities you love.
