Family Dinner

I’ve figured out a little shortcut that I’ll share with you. I like to set the dinner table while I’m unloading the dishes in the morning. I’m smart, right? Aren’t you impressed? I never know what’s going to derail my plans in a day, and at least I know the dinner table is set. It’s important to me to have a family dinner as often as possible.

I like looking at the table during the day, all ready for my family to enjoy at least an hour together in the evening. I have a theory: if the table looks pretty, it makes the food taste better. And, I’ll take all the help I can get in this area.

For the past few days, things have been a little off around here. It’s a busy time of year, and my kids have had activities in the evenings.

I set the table three days ago, and we still haven’t had dinner together as a family.

How is this possible?

Make your family dinner a priority

Make your family dinner a priority

I wouldn’t have even realized this, if I hadn’t seen the table set, each and every time I walked into the kitchen. Staring me in the face.

Yikes.

What have we been doing?

It’s simple, the normal chaos of our lives has been getting in the way, and we’ve been going out and grabbing something to eat in between picking up kids.

I don’t like doing this.

I’d much prefer to eat dinner at home during the week. It’s healthier, more relaxing, and allows us to have quality family time.

I also recognize that sometimes life just gets in the way.
If I don’t make eating dinner with my family a priority, it’s not going to happen. Everything else would become more important. We wouldn’t come together, and share the stories of our day, with the ones we love the most.

It’s how I grew up, and it’s how my kids are growing up. Most of the time.

Next week, I’ll do a better job of making sure it happens, but pay attention to this in your own lives. Make eating dinner together a priority. Make sure you’re connecting to the people you love. Even if it’s just an hour each week night.

Find meaning each day,

Dara
