We spent time last weekend in a place that didn’t have wifi. No wifi.

Can you even imagine? We didn’t have TV, Netflix, or any social media. You know how thrilled our kids were to be unplugged without the internet for two days.

There wasn’t Facebook, Instagram, movies, or my latest addiction, Scandal. Which by the way, if you haven’t watched, I highly recommend.

Our kids were horrified.

“Are you kidding me,” Zoe said in her teenage voiced laced with disgust, “There’s no wifi? What are we going to do?”

“We can’t watch movies?” Avi said, “Great. We’re going to be so bored.”

Our kids glared at us and were completely annoyed. How dare we force them to be in a situation where they had to actually talk to the people in front of them.

“I promise you’ll have a good time,” Jon said, “We’ll find lots of fun things to do.”

“I’m so sure,” Zoe said.

“Suck it up, this is how we grew up,” I loudly commented.

Jon is usually way more patient and understanding than I am.

Whenever I try to explain to my kids what it was like to grow up without a cell phone, social media, or more than three TV channels, they look at me like I’m from another planet. They can’t comprehend what it was like to type school papers, or have a question and not have the ability to Google the answer instantaneously. I’m sure we were the same way with our parents.

I’m happy to say we ended up having a fabulous weekend. We hung out, relaxed, went hiking a little bit, and talked. We played games, listened to music, had a family song fest, and the kids actually read from real books. Books they could hold in their hands. Wow, what a concept.

It was good for all of us. I didn’t miss being unplugged. In fact, I loved it. I don’t think I realized how addicted to my cell phone I’d become.

Of course, by Sunday afternoon, we couldn’t wait to be plugged in again, myself included.
